About Plot & Zone

Plot & Zone draws vegetable garden plans for small spaces: a 4×4 bed, a 4×8 raised bed, a 10×10 backyard plot. Every plan sits on a 1-foot grid, so you can count the squares and copy it into your own bed.

How the plans are made

  • Plants per square follow the square foot gardening spacing published by the University of Florida IFAS Extension: 1, 4, 9 or 16 plants per square, depending on the crop.
  • Sowing times are counted from your average last frost date and come from Cooperative Extension services. Each page links to the source it uses.
  • Companion planting: we only list pairings we could check against research, and we say whether a pairing is tested or just tradition.
  • Zones come from the official USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map.

Your seed packet and your local Extension office have the final word on spacing and dates where you live.

Who writes it

Plot & Zone is a small independent site. The texts are written with the help of AI and checked by a person against the sources linked on each page. The site has no garden of its own to show off, so you won’t find harvest stories here: just plans, numbers and where they come from.

If you spot a mistake in a plan or a source, we want to fix it.
